Provided by Pennsylvania Stsate University. Although the data is old (collected in 1991/1992), it gives GIS data of border, railway, river and stream.

ETOPO2＜2 arc-minutes resolution＞

ETOPO2＜1 arc-minute resolution＞

Original data is provided by National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) in Boulder, Colorado, USA. In the data set, the earth is devided in 5 arc-minutes of latitude and longitude, and altitude value is given for each meter. While the altitude value ranges to 8,000m, the data set includes water depth up to 10,000m.

ASTER Whole earth 3D topographic data (Japanese)

Free GDEM data opened in July, 2009. It is opened for the whole world. Surface imagery is 30m and elevation accuracy is ± 7m.
It can be considered as the most intimate whole earth topographic data as of July, 2009.

GRASS （Geographic Resources Analysis Support System）

Open-source GIS and Remote Sensing software which is almost equal to or even better than merchant ones that has function of topographical analysis. Firstly developped by Construction Engineering Research Laboratory of US Army. After that, it is provided as an open-source software and being improved by many users.

Quantum GIS

GIS software that is operable in Linux, Unix, Mac OSX and Windows. It supports many type of GIS data such as vector, raster and database type.

ILWIS

Integrated GIS developped by an University in Holland (ITC). Equipped with 3D display and tools for geostatistics. There are many information of exposition and applied case on the Web and updates are frequent.

TNTlite (Japanese)

Free introductory software to the TNTmips (GIS software towards high end) of MicroImages Co. in the USA. The difference from the merchant one is that there is data limit and it cannot export data.
